Thursday Morning Music Shuffle – Rock Light Drive Mix

Short on time today  – The Shuffle is after the JUMP

Good stuff follows!

“Rock and Roll Eyes” by Centro-Matic  (I want to take this opportunity to let you know that the Vol. 2 for Nuci’s Space presented by Country Fried Rock is out and ready for your purchase via Bandcamp – $5.00 or MORE  emphasis on the MORE. It’s a great cause and some great music has been donated for this effort. Including a song by Centro-Matic – which made this a great segue.)

“Light On” by Bad Cop  (If I’m not mistaken. Bad Cop are doing a free in-store at The Groove in East Nashville on Saturday.  You may or may not remember that Bad Cop were a featured artist on E2TG about a year ago.  Adam of Bad Cop is the founder of Jeffery Drag Records)

“Driving Toward the Sun” by Susan James (The title track to one of favorite albums of 2013)

“Dream Lover” by Big Star (a bonus track from the 1990s era reissue)

“Your Arrows” by Milktooth (another Nashville band that we’ve recently become acquainted with.  Check them out!)

“Whiskey Dreams” and “I’ll Figure You Out” by Wild Child  (A pair of songs from the album Pillow Talk by this fine Austin band.)

Friday Morning Music Shuffle – Best Ever Mix

(Throw back Friday Pic)

For me, every mix is unique and has value.  Is this the best ever mix? Probably not, that will be Monday or some other time (or many other times in the future).  This is a good mix – a damn good mix.  Why?  ‘Cause it has some of my all time favorites, a couple of brand new (to me) songs that I really dig, a nifty cover, a diverse but not crazily diverse mixture of songs (although I love me some crazily diverse mixtures), and it forces me to break a long-standing officially unofficial blog policy…. but we’ll get to all that.

Meanwhile – let’s just dive right into the mix

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);;js.src=”//”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

“Mission Bells” by Susan James (One of my favorite albums of 2013 so far is Driving Into the Sun.  This is awesome California folksy rock music with a mellow vibe. Americana, but California-style Americana, and it’s a fantastic album)

“Drinkin’ Problem” by Lori McKenna (I think I may have gotten this from a Popa Tunes compilation – I noticed he was a fan of her music page on Facebook. I am too.  This is a great song. Massachusetts Country Music. Nice.

“Ate” by Alvin Band (From a Noisetrade compilation that includes songs from several different Alvin Band albums. I’m realty growing to dig this music.)

“The Music in My Headphones” by Telepathic Teddy Bear (When someone called Telepathic Teddy Bear follows you on Twitter, you follow back.  When they have music for download, you download. You don’t know why you do this, but you do. And, you are glad you did.  I’m glad I did.)

“Into the Mines” by The End Men (The opening track on The End Men’s latest album, Play With Your Toys, makes big promises and prepares you for something beyond what you would expect from the band.  “Into the Mines” seals the deal.  A chillingly dark tale to be sure.  Remember, this is only a show, but it’s a show you do not want to miss…

“Cool Me Down” by Promised Land Sound from Summer Sampler 2013 (Jeffery Drag Records)

Jeffery Drag Records is a pretty bitchin’ cool label based here in Nashville.  It is the mad brain child of Bad Cop front man Adam Anyone Moult. Last year some time, we reported that Jeffery Drag had become part of the French Kiss Label Group. Anyway, they have this new compilation out on band camp – click on the picture of Promised Land Sound to get to that compilation – and it’s a pretty great mix of music.  Bad Cop, Natural Child, Majestico, and Useless Eaters. Plus it’s got this band.  Promised Land Sound (or Promised Land – I’m kind of confused…) are really great. Hell, they are “Jack White digs them” great (they put out a 7″ on his Third Man label).

“Old School Friends” by Honeyhoney from American Songwriter Sessions (originally on the band’s 2011 album Billy Jack)

Per their Facebook Page, Honeyhoney are from Nashvillle, but now live in Los Angeles. This song left me wanting to hear more from this band.  It’s a song that sounds like a classic, the minute you first lay ears on it.

“Changing” by The Gypsy West from Accomplices III: No Barcodes (2013)

Another of our favorites of 2013.  We reviewed this record early in the year.  The EP is the finale of a trilogy of songs that tell the story of a revolution.  This is the opening song from this EP and highlights the power and the creativity of this Brooklyn band.

Finally – at some point, I made a solemn vow, or an idle promise … I honest don’t remember the circumstances, but I made a promise that I honestly thought would be easy to keep.  But, today, I find my self (sort of) breaking that promise.  There are only a hand full of bands for which I would even consider breaking that promise.

“Boyfriend” (Justin Bieber Cover) by Valued Customer from “Fun Covers”

It helps that this isn’t so much a cover as it is a deconstruction.   I do love me some Valued Customer….  I don’t have a video of the song, but I have a video of Patrick from Valued Customer covering another song – plus another cover of this hit song by another familiar face.. You’ll have to watch the Playlist below to find out.

spacer Indie Nashville Imprint Signs Exciting New Deal With Esteemed Distributor spacer

There must be something in the water down in Nashville that has lead to the recent rise in buzzing talent in Tennessee’s “Music City.” One of the best examples of this is Jeffery Drag Records, a young label that has consistently released quality, southern-fried jams for the last three years. What began as a vessel for co-founders Adam Moult and Mike Gicz to release cassettes for their band Bad Cop has expanded to include Natural Child, Useless Eaters, Turbo Fruits, and Pujol.  And now, Jeffery Drag has signed a distribution deal with the highly coveted Frenchkiss Label Group (FKLG).

Frenchkiss creator Syd Butler feels that JDR will be a welcome addition to his company’s roster. “We’re incredibly excited to have Jeffery Drag coming aboard the Frenchkiss family and to see them grow as a label as they continue to put out a steady stream of extremely high-energy rock records,” says Syd. In joining with the FKLG, Jeffery Drag will gain a worldwide digital retail presence, a team of seasoned industry veterans who will help them expand their label’s business as well as roster, and a family of labels that will support and nurture the JDR team.

The recently executed deal will position Jeffery Drag Records within the Frenchkiss Label Group family of independent labels. FKLG specializes in a “handshake mentality” when it comes to music distribution, emphasizing the nurturing and connecting of label communities in order to grow an imprint’s visibility. This professional ideology, coupled with their recent partnership with The Orchard, gives Frenchkiss a solid and experienced foundation that aims at delivering and streamlining distribution.

Absurdist Psych-Rock Nashvillian Releases New EP Today   spacer

The EP:

After a year of recording and preparation, Nashville’s Majestico is excited to unleash his latest project, Love is God, unto the world today. The 7″ EP, released via hometown imprint Jeffery Drag Records, marks the psych-rock artist’s third release following his 2008 debut album Boundary Conditions, and 2009’s Live in Japan. Physical copies of the 7″ are now available for purchase on Jeffery Drag’s website, and digital copies are available on iTunes and Amazon.

Working with Jeremy Ferguson, who has recorded projects for Turbo Fruits, Bad Cop, and Be Your Own Pet at his Nashville-based Battle Tapes Recording studio, Majestico has turned out an EP of four tracks that together create an up-tempo thrill ride through psychedelia. The album’s title track, “Love is God” recently made its video premier via Prefix, and takes viewers on a visual journey as stimulating as the music itself. Together with songs “Gimme Love,” “Boom Boom,” and “Bright White Lady,” Majestico’s latest endeavor proves to be his latest act of “music magicka.”

“Love is God” Video

And here’s the EP Stream

Majestico was born from the breath of a new America, a land at the end of reason where dogma meets God. Singer/guitar player/brainchild Graham Fitzpenn was raised in an occult outside Houston, TX and was admired for his talent for music magicka. At the age of 25, he renounced these devices and turned from darkness. Marked by a new freedom, he moved to Nashville, TN and created his debut album, Boundary Conditions, which was released in 2008. Shortly after, he assembled a band and began to travel. A year later, they returned with Live at Japan, a record of their appearance on a Japanese television show in 2010 which also ended up on an early Jeffery Drag release, a split cassette with fellow Nashvillians and JDR alumni, Ranch Ghost. In the summer of 2011, they recorded their forthcoming 7″ EP Love is God, set for release on October 2nd by way of Jeffery Drag Records.

Jeffery Drag Records was formed in early 2009 by Adam Moult, frontman of Nashville based band Bad Cop. The label was originally founded to release limited pressings of cassettes and vinyl for Bad Cop and other various acts including The Hussy, Pujol, and Little Viking. In 2011, Bad Cop bass player Mike Gicz joined the Jeffery Drag team, overseeing cassette releases from Ranch Ghost, Electric Dollhouse Groovebuggy, and Majestico. The third and final member of Jeffery Drag is R.J. Jennings. The label has grown tremendously, adding Natural Child, Useless Eaters, and Ghost Dance to the roster. Jeffery Drag Records is continuing to grow on a daily basis and has quickly become a name brand for groundbreaking rock and roll music in Nashville and across the country.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle – Black House Mix

Good Morning American how are you? Here we are at the mid-point of the month of August.  Very soon now, I will be posting the Band of the Month Poll. Stay tuned for that one.  We have ten great Featured Artists this month, and I hope we can have some spirited competition.
We continue to spin some of the newer tracks added to our Playlist in August.  This are brand new songs, newish songs and older songs. Today, we have a plethora of goodies for your listening enjoyment.  Let us get to the Shuffle now!

We begin today with part of the split 7″ we’ve mention a time or two before.  Nashville bands Turbo Fruits and Bad Cop teamed up with Jeffery Drag Records also from Nashville to release a split 7″ single which is tons of fun.  Bad Cop contributed the song Wet Lips while Turbo Fruits have contributed their ode to the burgeoning local scene here which is called Love Tennessee. The Turbo Fruits track is in the shuffle today.

Here is a Turbo Fruits powered Crawfish Boil – Nashville style

Athens Georgia band Five-Eight are up next with an awesome cover of Neil Young’s classic, The Needle and the Damage Done which the band released on their 1993 album The Angriest Man.

Here’s Five-Eight doing Sitting Still with a couple of blokes who might know that song pretty well.
And here is Neil Young’s version this time from the Johnny Cash Show.

Next we have June Featured Artist, Tipi Valley with a track from his latest EP, Into the Woods which you can head over to Bandcamp to pick up.

And finally, we have an ironically danceable track from the 2006 album Ta-Dah by New York band Scissor Sisters in collaboration with Sir Elton John.  I Don’t Feel Like Dancing brought me into my office and closed out the morning shuffle.

MP3: Natural Child To Release 7" On Jeffery Drag Records

via: Audible Treats

Pre-Orders For 8/21 Release Include A Pack Of Rolling Papers With A Digital Download Card

 Critical Praise for Natural Child:

“Somehow, between the dizziness of bong rips, they’ve done more than just spew out mindless releases. They’ve managed to elevate their sound from the commonplace amped-up garage of their early singles to a complex level that’s more accurately likened to classic rock fused with country and blues.” – Stomp and Stammer

“They’re a lot more fun than the Black Keys or Kings of Leon or the few other bands that supposedly carried the torch for real rock in the past decade, and For the Love of the Game shows Natural Child maturing rapidly upon the classic rock radio moves of their debut 1971, and settling into their own skin a little bit.”– Get Bent

“Natural Child led off with their swampy blues-punk, their road-vetted, gritty riffs and doubled vocal melodies a sweaty, stoner-friendly pleasure as always. Wes Traylor probably has my favorite bass tone of any Nashvillian, and Natural Child is basically as much a comedy act as a punk band — what with their face-pulling and intentional cross-talk banter. Truly, one of the best sets I saw all day.” – Nashville Scene

The Song:

On August 21Jeffery Drag Records will release a 7″ from Nashville favorites Natural Child. Side A features the Neil Young-esque track “Mother Nature’s Daughter” while side B features the slow jam “Bodyswitchers Pt. II”.

The 7″ will be available for pre-order on August 13 from Jeffery Drag’s webstore. and each pre-order will come with a pack of Natural Child rolling papers containing a digital download card. Rolling paper packs/digital download cards will also be sold separately. 300 of the 7″ were pressed on black vinyl, 100 on opaque lavender, and 100 on mixed marble.

Get Bent had this to say about “Mother Nature’s Daughter”: “Natural Child isn’t fucking around with this classic rock stuff. For those still digesting the Stones-y country-rock influences all over their latest album For the Love of the Game, this track will be even more of a shocker. ‘Mother Nature’s Daughter’ sprawls over five minutes, features a blazing epic guitar solo, and sounds like a vintage outtake from Neil Young & Crazy Horse in their prime.”

Natural Child is extending their September tour in support of their highly anticipated third LP Hard in Heaven due out September 11. It is the second LP the band is releasing this year. Their tour includes West Coast dates, Canadian dates and a NY show at Brooklyn Bowl on August 11.

Turbo Fruits/Bad Cop Split 7" Out on Jeffery Drag Records

via: Audible Treats

spacer Jeffery Drag Hosts Twitter Contest for Limited Edition Clear-Lavender Vinyl spacer

Critical Praise:

“Need some garage rock for your Saturday? Look no further than the combo of Turbo Fruits and Bad Cop. These two Nashville bands are so raw and gritty that you’ll be left dizzy after listening. The great thing about garage bands like these guys, is that their music seriously sounds like it’s being played live right in your living room (or car) (or wherever else you might be, I guess).” The Record Stache

“Nashville is pretty much running shit when it comes to rock ‘n’ roll nowadays, aren’t they?” – Get Bent

“Bad Cop’s offering is ‘Wet Lips,’ a hectic garage-rocker very much in the spirit of the Trashmen, if they had made grainy, lo-fi videos with comely young women writhing around in them.” – Listen Dammit

“Turbo Fruit’s contribution, ‘Love Tennessee’ is a rumbling love letter to the Volunteer State, using fuzzy guitars and washed-out vocals to celebrate its residents’ shared love of drinking whiskey and partying hard.” – Consequence of Sound

The 7″:

Available now on Jeffery Drag Records is a split 7″ featuring “Love Tennessee” by Turbo Fruits and “Wet Lips” by Bad Cop. In addition to the 300 pressed on clear vinyl, there is a limited edition of 100 clear/lavender ONLY available at theJeffery Drag webstore and the record store Grimey’s in Nashville. Jeffery Drag will host a contest to give away a limited number of clear/lavender splits. The most creative Tweets that tag all three Twitters – Turbo Fruits(@TurboFruits), Bad Cop (@BadCopMusic) and Jeffery Drag (@JefferyDragRecs), will win. The tracks are currently available on iTunes.

Check out Jeffery Drag’s promo video:

Both tracks were selected for MP3 of the day at Spinner:

The Turbo Fruits track “Love Tennessee” is an anthem of sorts for the radical music scene bursting out of Nashville (JEFF the Brotherhood, Pujol, Natural Child) with lyrics: “Whiskey and Coke/Telling bad jokes/This is the place to be/We love Tennessee/No place we’d rather be/No place like Tennessee/That’s where we’ll always be.”

Like their previous music videos, the video for Bad Cop‘s single “Wet Lips” also stars an attractive femme fatale. The sixties garage rock sound is stressed by the swirling psychedelic footage-It’s a wild rock’n’roll party you’ll want to be invited to.

Turbo Fruits has been on tour with Deer Tick since April and Bad Cop recently toured with Cage the Elephant. Both bands will have full-length LPs out later this year.

Attention vinyl junkies: We have a limited amount of 7″s available for review-let us know if you’re interested and we’ll send you a copy.
